Adam Mazur — NY Times
This project marks a first collaboration with The New York Times, illustrating a sports feature exploring how different Major League Baseball teams are using an AI system called the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System. The system analyzes pitch location with high precision to determine whether a pitch is a strike, with usage varying significantly across teams.
The illustration avoids conventional AI visual tropes such as robot umpires. Instead, it visualizes surveillance-style camera systems scanning and measuring the trajectory and position of the ball, reflecting the underlying mechanics of the technology in a more grounded way.
The final piece was developed in collaboration with the art director and Fillin Global. It will also appear in print in the sports section of The New York Times.
